Value and Structure

Still life drawing with charcoal

This was so intimidating to me at first. How could You draw without contour lines? I very much enjoyed all the knowledge I learned from this.

Still life drawing from class reduction method using eraser.

I liked taking away the dark to reveal the light. It reminds me of sculpting. Take away what should not belong. That kneading eraser is such a useful tool. I like how it absorbs the dark while dabbing, and leaves a lighter area with no defined marks.

Still life with expressive background.

I enjoyed making the charcoal rubbing background. It felt so serene and gave such softness and movement to the piece. I can imagine this would be a good technique to use in drawing drapery folds.

Sketchbook study of folded fabric.

I started out using the subtractive method. It was looking very bland. I went in with stronger charcoal lines. maybe I need to go bolder still. I feel so scared and out of my comfort zone. When I do the work in class it makes sense. When I try again later, I miss the mark.
