FIN 111 Unit 1

Chair Drawings

Drawing a chair in 1,2 and 3 point perspective. First freehand, then with ruler and vanishing points.

We had to select a chair to draw in chalk pastels. I chose to draw the chair I painted last yer in painting class.

I had to start somewhere. I sketched out in pencil the chair. I know pencil lines are hard to get rid of, and show through the pastel. I was ok with that as I just had to get started doing somehing besides starting at a black paper and chalk pastels.

Using a cotton swap to blend when my fingers were too big.

I worked from the middle of the drawing to the top first. After i was done, I covered it with newsprint to color the bottom half.

I found it difficult to work in the fine areas. One you put black down you are committed. I need to think what sort of background I want for this drawing.

Because the picture itself was so busy, I decided to keep the background simple. I divided it into two and painted blue on the bottom, and the red on the top. I am not 100% happy with this drawing. It is my ‘Style” to add bold black lines around the edge of the drawing. I still might. Going to check with Instructor Elizabeth Russell first.

Critique went well. We talked bout adding some shadows under the chair for depth, and about how the chair gets darker on the back part of the seat, and lighter at the front. I added a little darker shadowing across the seat, and more white in the front. I also added some darker lines around the yellow wings of the chair. Under the chair and to the left, I added a little more black to create some more shadows.
