The Photocopy Project
Take a sketch I created and photocopy it. Then take that copy and copy it 8-10 times. Each time move it while copying to create distortions. Take those copies and collage onto a larger sheet of paper. Leave space to draw in between and color in.

I took all the pages and cut them out. I decided to use a large sheet of paper as I wanted to use a bunch of the faces.

Once I had my placements figured out, I glued the copies to the paper.

I went in with pencil and drew in some bodies for these cats.

I added in one more cat face because it needed to go there. Everything is then lined with black sharpie marker. This helps my brain organize the drawing.

I started coloring that fat cat on the bottom right first. He seemed to be staring at me hard. Next came his friend on the bottom left.

Moved on up to the big orange cat in the middle, then yellow tiger cat top left. Top right corner cat, then peeking out devil cat last.
Finished piece.

Karen Day, Comox Cats, 2024. 24×35 inches, chalk pastel and ink on paper.

Up on the wall for class critique.
It was mentioned that the middle cats cheek and tail were out of the drawing and should have been scaled down to fit. I drew it like that on purpose. Cats can never be contained. It was also called “Cartoon Style” by the Instructor. I don’t know if that is a good or bad thing. I thought I did a good job and spent time trying to shade and add highlights.
*Note: I did ask the Instructor if cartoon style was a good or bad thing. She said all styles are good, but she is here to challenge us with ‘realism’.
I have learned not to throw away things I do not like but to change them into art I do like. I took my image and ran it through some digital programs. Here are my results for further future artworks/Prints:

I had a lot of fun with this project. The black and white image would make a fantastic etching.
