Louise Bourgeois 1911 – 2010
-Born in France. Parents owned a tapestry restoration business which she worked in as a child
-Mother becomes ill and they hire a nanny to help out.
-When she was 10, father has an affair that leaves her feeling angry and betrayed.
-Earlier work focused on painting and printmaking
-Mother passes away in 1932 and she goes back to school to study philosophy. In 1933 she switches back to art.
-Marries and moved with husband to New York 1939
-Strange plaster sculptures 1964
-In 1982 at the age of 70 she creates massive spiders, figures hanging from wire, and art fashioned from her old clothes. Art was her tool for coping. “Art is a guarantee of sanity.”
I resonate with this artist as I also had childhood trauma. Art has always been a way for me to escape the horrible reality of life, and work through my trauma.

I very much enjoy the contrast of the bright colors and the aging treatment together. To make new things look old is a special sort of skill.
