Temporal and Time Based Art

Art that is non permanent and uses time to unfold. Doesn’t leave a lasting work.

ARTIST RESEARCH 02: Temporal and Time Based Art

Another great list of artists to research. At first I was drawn to Andy Goldsworthy and all his stunning installations in nature. I have seen pictures of his art before and enjoy the idea of building something that nature would destroy. On contemplation, I chose instead, Allan Kaprow. I have always loved creating ”Happenings.” I remember as a child going to The Caravan Stage Theatre Company in Armstrong B.C. Canada. All sorts of things were going on during the show. In the ticket line up, during intermission, and on exit from the production. You never knew what, or who was part of the show. Total crowd participation.

I find ”Happenings” can relieve a lot of tension in certain situations. This is classic Karen Day behaviors. “What’s Happening?” ”I am.”

Words Allan Kapaw 1962 Simolin Gallery NYC

In 1962 Allan Kaprow created WORDS. Participants moved around two rooms that were covered with words and drawings by the artist. He also recorded his voice to be played during the performance. Participants were asked to add their own words or thoughts, with materials provided, anywhere they wanted within the 2 rooms. The viewer becomes part of the creative process. For Allan Kaprow words were a huge part of any environment.

I think Graffiti art is similar. A person looks at a space and feels the need to add an Art Intervention. Someone comes along later and Tags their name with spray paint. Rival group gangs come and black out and overwrites with their own name. Owner comes and whites out the graffiti and that night a new picture is drawn…
