Oil Painting on Canvas 70.5 x 40.5 cm

A woman leaves her therapy session. She drops the head of her father into a well. Part of her veil with a mask attached falls away. She carries a basket of stuff to get rid of next. Painted in a Surreal style, it is full of symbology. A dreamscape rich in colours and textures. Behind her on the wall is a sign: FJA. Freud, Jung, and Adler the founding fathers of Psychotherapy. She wants to leave all those male influences behind. Everything up to a point had been male dominated for her. It also mirrors the mythological story of Electra, but in reverse. She values herself over the man.

I feel this style of painting looks medieval, but also contemporary at the same time. I relate to the’ dropping off the head’ of my fathers ideas. This has been something I myself have been working on as I go through my own therapy.

Varo grew up in a Patriarchal Society. Her liberation from her family and country allowed her to be free. I find the exploration of female ideas and power, and the ability to project it through art fascinating.

What could be if one was free from the male dominance of power?

I carry the idea to be free. to move forward with my own visions. My own feminine powers and thoughts. Free to be me.
