My piece titled This Is Me explores the connection of Identity between myself and my female ancestors. This Accordion Style Artbook carries my name and the names of my Mother’s Mothers. The reverse pages cycle through the lunar phases as well as list Womanly Attributes. A long red string binds our life force together, my female bloodline.
Growing up in a Catholic patriarchal family allowed me no room to explore my feministic thoughts. Caught in a cycle of abuse, my life unfolded in a predictable way. I have broken those ties that bind and grasped onto that thin red thread. I now channel the energy and wisdom from all these women who have preceded me. I say their names as I create my art, bringing their stories forward.
