Guest Artist Reflection – Jeremy Borsos
This artist has blown my mind! I have lived in our old house here in Courtenay for over 2 decades. My husband and I have built and added on over the years. We have always used materials available on hand. Or maybe something from the old shed which has a collection of interesting stuff. Or something purchased from the Re-Store just down the street. Never build with new materials, always just added on with old materials. So many photos over the years of the changes. I have had an art studio in almost every room in this house at some point.! And now I hear a man speaking about the same sort of thing. Using old windows in new buildings! Mind Blown. New concept of art. I do tell my husband Nick his building in this house is a work of art. I look at the bathroom sink counter and remember how it was part of the futon, or at the rail going down the back stairs the use to be the canoe paddle. I beat myself up for hoarding, for collecting too much stuff. But I see future art in so many items. I do understand the fascination with objects and memory. I have collections of things from places that could fill a museum.
What I also found informative about this talk was all the other artist names he shared; Walter Benjamin, Agnes Martin, Barbara Kruger. I found all their art to be interesting as well. Anything rusting, peeling, or aging over time always captures my attention. I love looking at urban decay cities. I enjoy taking things and distressing them. Giving modern things an aged feel. His rusty signs fascinate me. How cool that there is a large supply of olive oil cans around he can use.
I think we all want to own that little tiny house in Greece. my mind instantly started its own process of resurrecting that place. I would NOT have painted that charming window ugly white. I would have used a clear matte sealer on the wood. It gave the place such a rustic charm.
