Research Assignment Unit 3

Aganetha Dyck
Rosalie Gascoigne
Betye Saar

I had a look at 3 different artists, all women! I was fascinate by them all, and eventually chose Rosalie Gascoigne to write about as I am fascinated by her series of multiples.

  • Rosalie Gascoigne
  • Sculptor and Assemblage Artist.
  • Born in New Zealand 1917
  • Died in Australia 1999
  • Graduates Auckland University in 1937
  • Works as a teacher.
  • Marries Astronomer Ben Gascoigne in 1943 and moves to Australia.
  • Spends next 17 years in basic isolation on Mt. Stromlo near the Observatory.
  • Discovers a natural talent for creating assemblages
  • Had no formal art training.
  • First exhibition of work in 1974
  • Quickly becomes one of Austraiia’s most celebrated artists.
  • First female Australian to show at the Venice Biennale in 1982

The thing I like about her work is it is shrine-like. I love building weird little shrines. I just can’t get the Catholic Church love of rituals out of my head! She also uses text in her work. Cutting it up and rearranging into other forms of artworks. Also her use of multiples within her works. I really see how I have been an assemblage artist all my life.
