FIN 231 Unit 1

Unit 1 Proposal

This Unit is a continuation of Fin 230 Unit 2: The casting of multiples. After seeing my heads all laid out on the floor, I knew I needed to make more for a larger impact. It is interesting how the reading changes when there is one item, 10 items, or 100. I also was able to view all the white heads on a shelf in the Incubator Space at the Art Gallery. When I saw the 10 white heads on the shelf, I imagined another 2 shelfs for a total of 3 shelves with 10 different iterations of the heads on each shelf.

A mock up sketch of the project.

Sketch drawing of idea

I used a picture I took of the heads on the shelf at the gallery and made a quick collage to portray my idea in another visual way.

I like the black shelf and dark background visual.

Wednesday January 18 I talked to Studio Technician Jeff Brett about casting slip. He said he had a large bucket left over from last term in storage and he would dig it out for me.

Thursday January 19 with Jeff Bretts permission I poured some slip into a smaller bucket to bring home so I could slip cast over the weekend. I have it all set up in the basement and have started pouring. I need 20 more heads to create the 3 shelf vision.

Slip Casting in the basement

Tuesday Jan 24 – Today I found out how confused I am. Now I see there are 3 sections that make up Unit one and have nothing to do with this (I think). Meanwhile…

I like the process of repeated actions. My mind is able to wander while my muscle memory performs the task. It can be calming repeating the same patterns. I found a small butterfly mould so poured some to add to the heads. The castings are so delicate when dry. I had to transport them back up to the college. I only had some small breakage of a butterfly wing, which i fixed back on with some slip.

Butterflies!

Tuesday January 31 – Asked studio tech Jeff Brett when they could go into the bisque fire. He thought maybe Thursday, or end of the week.

Monday Feb 6- Heads are ready to be unloaded from the kiln. Back onto the shelf to wait for a clear glaze and another firing.

Spring reading break is happening soon. I hope to get them glazed before then. Will have to see how my time is.

This project is rolling over into Unit 2
