FIN 111 Unit 1

One Line Drawing

I find that my attention span is not very long sometime. Also there are a million distractions the moment you don’t want to be distracted.

First time using chalk pastels. It was interesting seeing what they would do in certain applications

We are starting a Unit on Perspective. When I was young (maybe 5), I use to go with my mom to visit her Auntie Flo now and then for tea. Great Auntie Flo had a large M C Escher book that I would study intently for the hour or so the adults would visit. As soon as I got home I would start right away drawing pictures with vanishing points. My favorite was drawing long, endless hallways with doors on either side.

Some perspective drawings from my sketchbook:

This is the ceiling in my front room that I painted years ago.

Critique Drawing #2

Thumbnail sketches of baby Eve. A black pug.
Sketch of Eve on the bed. thinking about backgrounds.
Experimenting with background rubbings.

I decided to go with a fairly close up view of her face.

The start of the drawing. I still need to grid to keep it on track.
Such a sweet little face.
Adding in a layer of graphite
Filling in the hair patterns.
After filling in with graphite. I went over everything with charcoal.
Erasing pigment and drawing in dark lines. Adding in more charcoal and darker lines.

Added in a background and many dark little hairs. I used a darker scratchy line around her as I like the way it looked. I also did some more erasing of pigment.

Baby Eve. 18″x 24″. graphite and charcoal on paper.

Baby Eve… I love her. She has been with me for 8 years. Never leaves my side. It was fun to focus my attention on this drawing. Baby Eve didn’t think so. I had to take my attention off of her to draw her.

FIN 110 Unit 2

I chose to draw Stonehenge for my critique drawing. I have many personal photos and vintage clippings and papers in my private collection of Stonehenge to use as reference. The first time I saw Stonehenge I was 13 years old. I was expecting to see something way bigger than what I expected. All those school textbook drawings done by Inigio Jones were way out of proportion. Sometimes when I am over in England, I imagine redoing the signage for the National Trust or English Heritage sights. Everything needs an upgrade over time.

Sketchbook page. Thinking about my drawing.
I have worked on some heritage stone walls being rebuilt over in England. I would love to try something large like Stonehenge. Maybe in my side yard here in Courtenay…
Sketchbook layout. #1 and #2

I planned my first idea to have the monument, stone map, and a close up insert. My second idea was to have a panorama of the stones, and a UFO flying overhead. After speaking with the instructor, I chose the narrative without the UFO. People will fill in what they want to believe.

Sketchbook musing about the stones.
Sketchbook. Sarsen stones.
Sketchbook Light sources, and stone layout maps.
Sketchbook. Was thinking about adding a UFO. Went for a different narrative instead.

FIN 110 Unit 1

Mark making and blind contour hand drawing

Line Variation Sketchbook Exercise

This was a fun exercise. It becomes a very mindful activity. I don’t spend a lot of time drawing so it was fun to just make marks.

I also spend some time checking out the Zentangle drawing patterns that are available on line. There are so many patterns you could choose. It would be interesting to do regional study of patterns. I grew up with a Ukrainian grandmother and we painted psanky eggs when I was a child. I learned the symbolism of the patterns. I imagine some symbols are universal, and others are very region specific in the world.

Study 1 Blind Contour

Blind Contour practice of a lightbulb with gesture sketches.

What’s in your Head?

I did a blind contour drawing for practice. have to give myself more time. I seem to rush through so many things. It has to do with anxiety. I hope to learn to slow down and enjoy the process.

I had fun with this. I realize that I am very impatient and need to give myself more time. I was so into the process, that i did not stop to take a photo of my blind contour drawing before I started filling in the patterns.
